Miles Stanley Epling Jr. 75, of Point Pleasant WV, passed away on April 13, 2025. Born on October 7, 1949, Miles dedicated much of his life to public service and community involvement.
A proud veteran of the US Marine Corps and Purple Heart recipient, Miles continued his legacy of service by joining the Federal Bureau of Investigation as well as serving as the State Adjutant for the American Legion for 24 years. He also served as Mason County Circuit Clerk, Magistrate, Commissioner, and was a respected Commander and member of the American Legion Post 23. Miles served as the National Commander of the American Legion from 1989 to 1990. His commitment to his community was evident through his tireless work and the positive impact he made in each role.
Miles was a graduate of Point Pleasant High School Class of 1967 and furthered his education at West Virginia University Parkersburg. Beyond his professional and military achievements, he was deeply passionate about farming and spending quality time with his family, which remained central throughout his life.
He is survived by his two sons, Tommy and Travis (Whitney) Epling; grandchildren Torrie (Tucker), Trinity, Tanner, Miles, and Marshall Epling; great-grandchildren Tillie and Teller Mayes; brother, George (Becky) Epling; and several nieces and nephews including Kelly (Jeff) Fields, Amber (Russ) Bergdoll, Liberty (Jeremy) Boles, Jamie Tate, and Barry (Ann) Epling; mother of his children, Diane Epling; and his special friend Mary Gandee. He was preceded in death by his parents, Miles S. and Freda (Henry) Epling, and his brother, Bruce Epling.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 18, 2025, at the Point Pleasant Jr/Sr High School in Point Pleasant with Rev. Carl "Boxer" Swisher officiating. A private burial will follow at the Epling Family Cemetery with Military graveside honors given by the United States Marine Honor Guard, Stewart-Johnson VFW Post 9926 of Mason and Marine Corps League. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Friday at the high school.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Miles Epling Memorial Scholarship Fund C/O Travis Epling 300 Skyline Parkway, Athens, GA 30606.
Arrangements are under the direction of Wilcoxen Funeral Home in Point Pleasant.
A celebration of life will be held in Epling Hall at the American Legion Post 23 in Point Pleasant on Saturday, April 19, 2025 from 3pm to 6pm.
Miles's life and legacy will be honored in a ceremony reflecting his significant contributions and the indelible mark he left on his community and family.
