Zora Avaline Racer

Zora Avaline Chapman Racer, 92, of Apple Grove, passed away Monday, January 23, 2023, at Hidden Brooke Way, Cabell Health Care Center in Culloden, WV.

She was born August 19, 1930, in Pliny, WV, a daughter of the late Ercel Avery Fellure and Edyth Opal (Whitt) Fellure.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Brice Henley Chapman and John James "Jim" Racer; siblings, Lester Fellure, Zeda Ferguson, Hoy Fellure, Hattie Hammond and Emma Hammond; and a stepson, John Racer.

Avaline was a faithful lifelong member of the Mt. Union Church of Pliny, where she taught Sunday School, loved to sing in the church choir and helped anywhere she was needed. She went to Winfield High School and worked at the Sylvania Plant in Point Pleasant. Most of all, she loved being a wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon L. and Rolfe Lee of Gallipolis Ferry; grandson, Timothy R. Lee of Gallipolis Ferry; great-granddaughter, Kayla Jean Lee of Point Pleasant; great-great-grandson, Carter Shane Salmons; stepson, Jack (Janie) Racer of Mentor, OH; step-grandchild, Chris Racer of Mentor; and sisters-in-law, Dorothy Fellure of Apple Grove and Betty Fellure of Fraziers Bottom; special nephew, Terry Ferguson; special friend, Gloria Hill; and she also leaves behind several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, January 26, 2023, at the Mt. Union Church with Pastor Rex Nance officiating.  Burial will follow in the Mt. Union Cemetery in Pliny.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church.
