Walter Otho Mattox

Walter O. "Otho" Mattox, 95, of Point Pleasant, passed away Sunday, March 19, 2023, at Arbors of Gallipolis Nursing Center, Gallipolis, OH.

He was born April 15, 1927, in Middleport, OH, a son of the late Carl W. Mattox and Edna V. Mattox.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth M. Mattox; brothers, Leonard Mattox of Nitro, WV and Lawrence Mattox of Smyrna, GA; and a sister, Bessie Mattox Wilson of Point Pleasant.

Otho was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Point Pleasant and American Legion Post 23 of Point Pleasant.  He graduated from Point Pleasant High School in 1945.  In April of 1945, he enlisted and served on the USS Oregon City and remained in the Naval Reserve for nine years.

Otho married Elizabeth Mae Krebs in 1950 and remained devoted to her until her passing in 2016.  He retired from the Ohio Valley Publishing Company. He also founded Mattox Printing Service in 1954 and operated as its owner until his death.  He graduated from Marshall University with a Regents Bachelor of Arts Degree and in 1989 earned his private pilot licenses.

He is survived by a daughter, Karla Dawn Donovan and husband Kevin Donovan of Wilmington, NC; a son, Brent Scott Mattox of Point Pleasant; and five grandchildren; Ryan Patrick Donovan of Jersey City, NJ, Connor Matthew Donovan of Chapel Hill, NC, Sean Michael Donovan of New York, NY, Gavin Scott Mattox of Point Pleasant and Aaron Michael Mattox of College Station, TX.  Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Geneth G. Krebs of Point Pleasant and Sharon Sue McGraw and husband John McGraw of Point Pleasant; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service and burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 23, 2023, at New Lone Oak Cemetery in Point Pleasant. Military graveside honors will be given by the United States Navy Honor Guard and Stewart-Johnson VFW Post 9926 of Mason, WV.  Arrangements are under the direction of Wilcoxen Funeral Home in Point Pleasant.
