SFC, Retired, Van William Bernard, 77, of Point Pleasant, died Friday, January 15, 2010 at Pleasant Valley Hospital. He was a retired chemical operator from Akzo with 25 years service, a U.S. Army veteran retired with 20 years service, and a member of the American Legion Post No. 23 of Point Pleasant. Van was born September 3, 1932 in Leon, WV, a son of the late Van Graham Bernard and Lillian J. (Higgins) Bernard Davis. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Kathleen M. Collas. Surviving is his wife, Betty (Whitt) Bernard of Point Pleasant; a daughter, Valerie Bernard of Point Pleasant; a son and daughter-in-law, Brett and Dorrane Bernard of Salt Lake City, Utah; one granddaughter, Darby Dennis of Point Pleasant; two sisters, Allene (Lawrence) Plants of Point Pleasant, and Ernestine (Garry) Lilly of Point Pleasant; one brother, Ernest Davis of Point Pleasant. Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Monday, January 18, 2010 at the Wilcoxen Funeral Home in Point Pleasant with Pastor Dean Warner officiating. Burial will follow in the Kirkland Memorial Gardens in Point Pleasant, where military graveside rites will be given by American Legion Post No. 23 of Point Pleasant.
