Lida W. Garland, 93, of Gallipolis Ferry, WV died Wednesday, March 7, 2007 at the Holzer Senior Care Center. Lida was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church of Point Pleasant and attended the Jordan Baptist Church of Gallipolis Ferry. She was a employee of the G.C. Murphy Company until her marriage to Captain Howard E. Garland in 1937. She was a life long member of the Mason County Extension Service in support of the Homemakers Clubs and related 4-H organizaions, during which time she served a president of the Illahee Homemakers Club, was past president of the Mason County Homemakers, leader of the Mountain Climbers 4-H club of Gallipolis Ferry, a 4-H All Star and continued to serve in an advisory role in 4-H clubs for over 55 years. She was a West Virginia Belle in 1983, but perhaps Lida was best known in Mason County for her love of cooking and baking for others. She was born June 3, 1913 in Henderson, WV to the late Charles and Mary Wilson of Point Pleasant. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Capt. Howard E. Garland; and son-in-law; Okey Tawney. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Howard Randall and Sandra Garland of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Charles Wayne and Phyllis Garland of Point Pleasant; two daughters and son-in-law, Mary Lou Tawney of Gallipolis, Ohio and Rita Ann and Norm Persin of Oak Hill, Ohio; six grandchildren, Devin Adler of Cincinnati, Ohio, Jay Saxton of Branson, Missouri, Angela Martin of Point Pleasant, Greg Garland of Cincinnati, Ohio, Haley Persin Kreischer of Oak Hill, Ohio, Jimmy Dan Persin of Oak Hill, Ohio; and eight great grandchildren, Megan Adler, Matthew Eplion, Cary Adler, Holliday Saxton, Cooper Saxton and Marley Kreischer, Stephen Martin and Leean Martin. Services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, March 12, 2007 at the Wilcoxen Funeral Home with Rev. William "Bud" Hatfield and Rev. Richard DeQuasie officiating. Burial will follow in the Garland Family Cemetery in Gallipolis Ferry. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Sunday March 11, 2007 at the funeral home.
