Joe Eddy Smith

Joe Eddy Smith, 76, of Point Pleasant, passed away Thursday, September 5, 2024, at home.

He was born November 21, 1947, in Charleston, WV, a son of the late James Alvie Smith and Geraldine (Keene) Smith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Susan (Morgan) Smith.

Joe was a graduate of Point Pleasant High School Class of 1966. He was a member of New Hope Bible Baptist Church in Point Pleasant.  He was a retired Sergeant from the 3664th Maintenance Company WVARNG with 23 years of service.

As quoted by Amy Grady "Joe is the reason softball grew in this town. He dedicated himself to the Point Pleasant Girls Softball League, the players and high school program. Many were coached by Joe as a kid or teen and all were better players because of it."

He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Ellen Elizabeth (Long) Smith; five children, Jill Smith of Point Pleasant, Jennifer (Brooks) Hinzman of Gallipolis Ferry, WV, Lori (Dave) Byus of Point Pleasant, Beth (Alex) Martin of Point Pleasant and Robbie (Katrina) Greenlee of Gallipolis Ferry; and seven grandchildren, Kelsie and Kaylee Byus, Katlyn, Tyler and Hadley Hinzman, Lillian Hill and Aubree Greenlee.  He is also survived by a sister, Pam Simpkins of Sun Prairie, WI; a special cousin, Judd Stewart of Beckley, WV; and special neighbors, JR and James Lilly of Point Pleasant.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in memory of Joe can be made to the Brielle Rimmey Ball Park Memorial Fund at Ohio Valley Bank.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 10, 2024, at Wilcoxen Funeral Home in Point Pleasant, with Pastor Mel Mock officiating.  Burial will follow at Kirkland Memorial Gardens in Point Pleasant, where military graveside honors will be given by the West Virginia Army Honor Guard and Stewart-Johnson VFW Post 9926 of Mason, WV.  Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Monday, September 9, 2024, at the funeral home.
