Gene R. Hern

Gene R. Hern, 87, of Point Pleasant, passed away Thursday May 25, 2017, at home surrounded by his family. He was born November 26, 1929, in Kayford, WV, a son of the late Vernie Hern and Bessie Marie (Poynter) Hern. Gene served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a protestant in faith, and a member of American Legion Post 23 of Point Pleasant and United Steelworkers Union 5668 of Ravenswood. Gene retired with 33 years service from Constellium in Ravenswood and previously worked for Truax & Traer Coal Company in Kayford. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Myrtle Basham, Almedia Mays and Eileen Morgan; and four brothers, Ralph, Jim, Lawrence and Clarence Hern. He is survived by his wife, Doma (Pratt) Hern of Point Pleasant; a daughter and son-in-law, Erma Jean and Richard Young of Point Pleasant; one son, Gene R. "Pete" Hern Jr. of Point Pleasant; two grandchildren, Jason Taylor of Point Pleasant and Matthew (Chelsea) Ridgway of Hartford; three great-grandchildren, Peyton Taylor, Preston Taylor and Allison Ridgway; one sister, Erma Stanley of Orgas, WV; and a brother, Richard E. (Nancy) Hern of Point Pleasant. In honoring Gene's wishes a private graveside service will be held at New Lone Oak Cemetery in Point Pleasant, with Rev. Carl "Boxer" Swisher officiating. Military honors will be given by the West Virginia Army Honor Guard and American Legion Post 23 of Point Pleasant. Arrangements are under the direction of Wilcoxen Funeral Home in Point Pleasant.
