Emerson "Gene" Mayes, of Apple Grove, WV, born July 12, 1926, passed away Tuesday, August 30, 2011 surrounded by family at Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. Gene was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was a Christian and attended Ashton Baptist Church. He also was a U. S. Army veteran and had retired from ACF Industries in Huntington, WV. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emerson Burley Mayes and Clara (Adkins) Mayes; a daughter, Terry Lee Mayes; siblings, Junior "Dooney" Mayes, Donnie "Smiley" Mayes, and Danny Mayes. Gene is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Frankie (Dalton) Mayes of Apple Grove, formerly of Harts, WV; children, David (Patsy) Brumfield of Grandview, IN, Judy Barnett of Point Pleasant, Pam (Jimmy) Smith of Antwerp, OH, and Kim (Jack) Alyanakian of Bryan, OH; grandchildren, Shawn (Kristy) Brumfield, Tim (Shirley) Brumfield, Chris (Melissa) Barnett, Shana (Shad) Roberts, Jessie (Matt) Smith, J.R. Smith, Ara, Zaven, Eden and Arella Alyanakian; nine great grandchildren; a special niece, Patty Edmonds, siblings, Harold (Viola) Mayes, Randall (Freda) Mayes, Lester (Karen) Mayes, Sylvia Harris, Betty (Bill) Brumfield and a host of family and friends. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, September 3, 2011 at the Ashton Baptist Church with Max Spurlock and Rev. Justin Moran officiating. Burial will follow in the Beale Chapel Cemetery at Apple Grove. Visitation will be Friday, September 2 from 6-8 p.m. at the Wilcoxen Funeral Home in Point Pleasant, and one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.
