Ellen S. Deweese, 90, of Duluth, Georgia, and former resident of Point Pleasant died Tuesday, January 25, 2011. She was born April 28, 1920 in Cheshire, Ohio, a daughter of the late Cecil and Elna Rife Spurlock. Mrs. Deweese moved to Duluth, Georgia in 1995, and was a member of Duluth First United Methodist Church. She was a 1941 graduate from the Holzer School of Nursing. Her entire professional career as a registered nurse was spent at Holzer Hospital and Medical Center in Gallipolis, Ohio. She worked as a surgical operating room nurse and for the last 26 years prior to her retirement in 1982 as a labor and delivery nurse in the obstetrics unit. She was a sixty year member of the American Legion Auxiliary having served as secretary, treasurer and president of the organization. She had served as an American Red Cross nurse since 1954. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, W. Vernon Deweese who she married March 15, 1945. Ellen is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Joshua Vernon and Paula Deweese of Duluth, Georgia; one grandson, Jackson Deweese of Duluth, Georgia; and two sisters, Arlene Spurlock of Bradenton, Florida and Wanda Hess of Columbus, Ohio. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 5, 2011 at the Wilcoxen Funeral Home in Point Pleasant with Pastor Janice Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Kirkland Memorial Gardens in Point Pleasant.
