Elizabeth Anne Lloyd

July 30, 1934 — December 6, 2023

Elizabeth Anne Meadows (later Watterson and Lloyd), 89, of Upland, went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, December 6, 2023. She was born at her home on Walnut Lane Farm in the small community of Upland, located in Southern Mason County, West Virginia. The year was 1934. The country was in the midst of the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl agricultural crisis, and rampant gangster crime in the nation's large cities. President Roosevelt's evening radio addresses, commonly known as his "fireside chats," calmed the people during this period of despair and uncertainty.

A precocious and curious child, young Elizabeth was a daddy's girl who preferred to spend her days outside scurrying about the barnyard, learning, and listening as he tended to chickens, pigs, and sheep.  The expected and necessary housekeeping duties of the time held little interest to Elizabeth, much to her mother's chagrin.  But as her daughter later pronounced with loving humor:

She couldn't keep the house clean

She barely did the dishes

She couldn't get to church on time

But her pies were sure delicious!

Elizabeth delighted in the sights and sounds of nature....savoring the seasonal splendor of her beloved state.  She listened attentively to and learned the birdsong of native birds and further refined this knowledge later in the study of ornithology at college.  She learned with her father the names of native trees, their individual leaf, bark, and limb characteristics and further developed this interest in botany at college and throughout her life.

Elizabeth spent most of her adult life teaching science and English in Mason and Wetzel County public schools.  Her science students will likely never forget observing & charting the moon's shape, phase, and position in the night sky.  Her English students will likely never forget the sense of forboding as the large, stuffed black crow stared at them from its perch on her desk as she read to them "The Raven" by Edgar Allen Poe.

Elizabeth is survived by four of her five children, Deborah Czewski (Mark), John Watterson Jr. (Terri), Russell Watterson (Annie),  David Lloyd (Angela), and her dear friend "Richie Dale" Green, whom she loved like a son. Surviving step-children are Bill Lloyd and Marcia (Jim) Plants and their families.

Both parents, Charles and Audrey (Lilly) Meadows, husbands, John Watterson and Roy Lloyd, son, Charles Watterson and her brother, Milton Meadows predeceased Elizabeth.  She is survived by her sister, Lauretta (George) Jackson and sister-in-law, Alice Meadows. Surviving grandchildren are Dr. Robert (Stacey) Salvino, Joseph (Angelica) Salvino, Tara Salvino, Rachael Fox, Trey Watterson, Hannah (Allston) Davis, Bethany (Nathaniel) Reynolds, Derrick (Loren) Watterson, Garrett (Whitney) Watterson, Megan Watterson, Morgan (Gage) Messick, Wynston (Jessica) Lloyd, Abigail Lloyd and numerous great-grandchildren and a host of extended family members.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, December 10, 2023 at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Fraziers Bottom (Upland), WV with Pastor Chuck Elkins officiating.  Burial will follow in the Mount Zion Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Saturday at the Wilcoxen Funeral Home in Point Pleasant.
