Eddie Arnold Mayes, 79, of Point Pleasant, went home to be with his savior Monday, February 27, 2023, at Pleasant Valley Hospital, surrounded by his family.
He was born May 25, 1943, in Henderson, a son of the late George Albert Mayes and Helen Rae (Pearson) Mayes.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, George William Mayes; sisters, Anna Lee Stephens and Sandra Eads; granddaughter, Sarah O. Cain, and great-grandchildren, Colson and Violet.
Eddie was an active member of the Mount Alto Church of Christ. He was a preacher when needed in area churches. He was a graduate of Point Pleasant High School Class of 1961 and retired from McGinnis Inc. as a dock supervisor. Eddie was a Golden Gloves boxing champion 1959-1961 and coached the Point Pleasant Boxing Club in the late 70's and early 80's. He was a huge Big Blacks football fan and loved fishing and squirrel hunting.
He is survived by his wife of 61 yrs. Betty L. (Huffman) Mayes; children, Brenna (Randy) Shobe of Point Pleasant, Eddie (Missy) Mayes of Point Pleasant, Angela Cremeans of Hurricane, WV, George (Raquel) Mayes of Leon, Lori (Duane) Cain of Point Pleasant and Bethany (Danny) Mayes of Point Pleasant; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Dottie Eads of Point Pleasant, June Roberts of Point Pleasant and Shirley Dressler of Zanesville, OH; and a host of nieces, nephews and three fur babies Charlie, Rocky and Bandit.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 3, 2023, at the Wilcoxen Funeral Home in Point Pleasant, with Randy Shobe officiating. Burial will follow in the Forest Hills Cemetery in Letart. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the funeral service Friday at the funeral home.
