Earnest "Jake" William Rainey Sr, 77, of Gallipolis Ferry, died Thursday, September 16, 2010, at the Select Specialty Hospital in Charleston, WV. He was born June 18, 1933, in Gallipolis Ferry, WV, a son of the late Harry "Doc" Rainey and Sadie Sue (Shepherd) Rainey. Jake was a graduate of Point Pleasant High School with the Class of 1952. He was a member of the PPHS Legends Football team, and in 2003 was given the honor of honorary Co-Captain of that team. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict for three years. He began his work career at the Celanese Plant in Gallipolis Ferry as a utility worker, and after 43 years service, retired from AKZO Nobel as a construction superintendent. He was a part- time minister of the Zion Baptist Church of Gallipolis Ferry, where he also taught the Adult Sunday School class. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Teddy "TG" Rainey; two brothers, Paul Rainey and Gary Rainey; and a brother-in-law, Don Norvell. Surviving are his wife and high school sweetheart, whom he married April 20, 1953, Teddy Rose (Meaige) Rainey of Gallipolis Ferry; his children, Earnest "Bill" Rainey and wife Penny of Gallipolis Ferry, Cynthia Ann Myers and husband Roy of Gallipolis Ferry, Stephen Scott Rainey and wife Colleen of Gallipolis Ferry, Susan Star Annette Rainey of Gallipolis Ferry, and Scarlett Rose Enos and husband Aaron of Point Pleasant; a daughter-in-law, Debra Rainey of Gallipolis Ferry; ten grandchildren, Jessica Rainey of Gallipolis Ferry, Kacee Rainey of Gallipolis Ferry, Jacob Rainey of Gallipolis Ferry, Jamie Rainey of Gallipolis Ferry, Zoe Enos of Point Pleasant. Lisa Myers Lucas of Gallipolis, Ohio, Tiffany Davis of Point Pleasant, Stacy Warden of Point Pleasant, Jennifer Warden of New Haven, and Amethyst Taylor of Gallipolis Ferry; and five brothers and sisters, James (Alma) Rainey of Apple Grove, Mary Jane Norvell of Chesapeake, Virginia, Kay (Rick) Cole of Barboursville, Betty Ann Beatty of Sydney, Ohio, and Roger (Kim) Rainey of Point Pleasant. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, September 19, 2010 at the Zion Baptist Church in Gallipolis Ferry, WV with Rev. Ronald Long and Pastor David Ricks officiating, and pianist Earnest "Bill" Rainey. Burial will follow at the Zion Cemetery in Gallipolis Ferry where military graveside rites will be given by American Legion Post No. 23 of Point Pleasant and the West Virginia Honor Guard.
