Loving husband and devoted father, Dexter Ray Dowell, 80, of Gallipolis Ferry, went home to be with his lord on Thursday, July 22, 2021, surrounded by his family. He was born May 9, 1941, in Southside, a son of the late Leonard Alexander Dowell and Letha Catherine (Lanier) Dowell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Jerry Edwin Dowell and sister, Nancy (Gene) Powell. Dexter was a member of Jordan Baptist Church in Gallipolis Ferry and a graduate of Point Pleasant High School Class of 1959.He served in the United States Army from 1964-1966 and retired after 32 years of service from M & G Polymers of Apple Grove. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Nancy (Fowble) Dowell of Gallipolis Ferry; and two daughters, Misti Dowell of Frederick, MD and Jodi Dowell of Huntington.He is also survived by sisters, Dorothy "Dottie" Cook of Point Pleasant and Roberta Kay (Glenn) Anders of Gallipolis, OH; brothers, George Allen (Phyllis) Dowell of Point Pleasant and Michael Lee (Jackie) Dowell of Jacksonville, NC; best friend, James Donal (Alice) Hopson of Knoxville, TN; and a host of nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 25, 2021, at the Wilcoxen Funeral Home in Point Pleasant, with Pastor Bo Burgess officiating.Burial will follow at the Beech Hill Cemetery at Southside.The family will receive friends two hours prior to the funeral service Sunday at the funeral home.
