Curtis Ray "Butch" Newsome Jr.

August 8, 1951 — November 6, 2024

It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of Butch (Curtis) Newsome Jr., a beloved husband, father, and friend. He peacefully left us on November 6, 2024, at the age of 73, surrounded by the warmth of love from his family and friends.

Born in Holden, West Virginia, to Curtis and Jean Newsome, Butch dedicated his life to his family and his work. He spent an inspiring 40 years as a maintenance welder for American Electric Power (AEP) at the James M. Gavin plant in Cheshire, OH. Earlier in his career, he worked at Newport News shipbuilding and dry dock while learning to weld.

Butch has now reunited with his beloved parents, Curtis and Jean Newsome, as well as his grandparents, Frank and Bertha Smith and Jim and Addie Newsome, all of whom preceded him in death.

He leaves behind a loving legacy, including his devoted wife of 52 years, Susie Newsome, and his son, Shawn “Grizz” Newsome, of Point Pleasant, WV.

Butch was a brother to siblings Gary (Staci) Newsome of Richmond, Indiana, Pat Newsome, and Anita Turner, both of Point Pleasant, West Virginia. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, David (Cheryl) Warner of Midlothian, Virginia.

He leaves behind a host of cherished nieces and nephews: Stephanie Johnson, Becci Turner, Kelly (Levi) Edwards, Todd Neville of Point Pleasant, WV; Kara (Brian) Bellew of Centerville, IN; Andy (Chelsey) Newsome of Richmond, IN; David (Jackie) Warner II of Midland, MI; Natalie Warner of Henrico, VA; Tiffany Flatt (Warner) of Fraser, MI; and many great nieces and nephews.

Those who had the privilege of knowing Butch will fondly remember his unwavering love for Reese’s Cups and Diet Coke. He served as the Director of the Mason County Jack Rodger’s Little League, coaching the 7–8 year-old division. Former players will fondly recall his boisterous, expected direction of “don’t look, dig, dig, dig!” If you played on his team, you knew how to hit a ball and how to run. Whether coaching or simply enjoying the camaraderie while leaning back on the wooden collection bins  with a Diet Coke in one hand and a Reese’s Cup in the other—because what's a day at the ballpark without a touch of sweetness?

A passionate hunter, Butch thrived in the great outdoors and embraced the thrill of the chase. In recent years, he found joy in collecting and seeking out just the right items to bring home to add to his various treasures.

Butch’s kindness, sense of humor, and love for his family will always be remembered fondly. His legacy of love will forever remain in the hearts of all who had the honor of knowing him.

A celebration of Butch's life will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, November 11, 2024, at the Wilcoxen Funeral Home in Point Pleasant, with Pastor Mark Oliver officiating. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
