Carol Suzie Miller passed away peacefully, June 2, 2022, at home surrounded by her family after a long battle with Multiple Sclerosis.She was born September 11, 1945, in Toledo, Ohio, the daughter of the late William and Grace Somerville.Suzie’s legacy is one of faith, family, and an accomplished career. A 1963 graduate from Point Pleasant High School, Suzie dated and married her High School Sweetheart Howard Lee Miller.In January they celebrated 57 years of marriage.Upon graduation she attended Marshall University and earned her Master’s in Education, while cheering on Howie and the Thundering Herd. Suzie dedicated her life to the education of the children of Mason County.She started her career as a teacher at Henderson Elementary and retired as Director of Federal Programs.During her time in the school system, she received numerous awards.A few notable honors were: Distinguished West Virginian of the Year by Governor Cecil H. Underwood, Professional Emeritus of the Year, Citation of Merit Award from the WV Reading Association, and the Mason County Reading Council has named their yearly award in her honor.In addition, she partnered and was president of the Foundation Library Research Program.A federally funded program which developed, activated, and trained an automated library system throughout the state.It has been often stated that if an educator came to Suzie with an idea to improve any form of educating a child, she found a way for it to happen. Education has always been Suzie’s passion, but family is her first love.She has two children, her son, Christopher Lee, whom she had a glorious reunion within heaven, and her daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Shawn Ross.Her three favorite grandchildren Jacob, Caleb, and Hannah. Her pride in these three was endless. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, William (Pete) and Carla Somerville and special niece Elizabeth.Also, by her sister and brother-in-law, Lois and Maurice Nott of St. Petersburg, Florida, as well as several nieces and nephews. Suzie was a classy lady of great faith. She completed her elementary education at Pomeroy Catholic Grade School.She was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Point Pleasant. She has been a Sunday School teacher, Eucharistic Minister, lector, and member of the Women’s club. Twenty years ago, Suzie made a decision, completed all the paperwork and anticipated upon her passing making a donation to Columbia University Tissue Bank.Her goal was to spare future generations any pain and suffering she experienced from Multiple Sclerosis.Her request has been fulfilled and her legacy of helping others will live on as research and teaching will be used by her donation. In lieu of flowers, the family has started a scholarship fund in memory of Suzie at People’s Bank in Point Pleasant. This scholarship will be awarded to a graduate of Point Pleasant High School.You can make deposits to “Suzie Miller Scholarship Fund” c/o People’s Bank, 410 Main Street, Point Pleasant, WV 25550 The best way to celebrate the life of Suzie is to read a book in her memory.Read to yourself or to a child.Lay down your cellphone, turn off your TV and enjoy a good book. A Liturgy of Christian Burial Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Monday, June 6, 2022 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Point Pleasant with Father Ronald G. Prechtl officiating. Burial will follow in Kirkland Memorial Gardens in Point Pleasant. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service Monday, at the church.
