Bernadine B. Kayser

August 12, 1928 — February 3, 2023

Bernadine B. Kayser, 94, passed away on February 3 rd , 2023, peacefully in her home at Woodlands Retirement Community after enjoying a full day and dinner with good friends. She will be remembered as a woman of faith and family, loved by the many people who call her Mom, Memaw, and friend.

Bernadine was a lifelong member of the Mason County community. She was born on August 12 th , 1928, in her home on Bear Wallow Ridge in Leon, WV, to the late Hobert G. Sayre and Corda Pullins Sayre. She graduated Point Pleasant High School in 1945 and married Robert Allen Kayser Sr. on June 15 th , 1948. She was a familiar figure because of her work in local doctor’s offices for over 30 years. Bernadine remained in Point Pleasant until 2020, when she moved to Huntington, WV, to be closer to her son, daughter-in-law, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, whose family dinners always seemed to need a cherry pie or angel food cake. After moving to Woodlands, she continued to be an active member of her community, making new friends and participating in many of the activities offered, touching lives each day.

Bernadine raised three sons, Robert Allen Jr, M.D., Cofer Dallas, and David Michael. Also known as Memaw, she was a loving grandmother to eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren, whose lives she continued to be active in until her death. Over the years, Bernadine hosted over a thousand Sunday dinners and birthday parties, traveled to Germany, Portugal, Hawaii, England, and Alaska with her family, and spent almost every Saturday night with her grandson, Matt.

She was an active member at Trinity United Methodist Church for over 70 years, where she taught Sunday School, sang in the Church Choir, and participated in many service activities including Operation Christmas Child and the Heavenly Hands Knitting Group. Bernadine especially cherished the friendship, ministry, and service of the Trinity Choir and the Heavenly Hands Knitting group, who have knit thousands of blankets and caps for newborns, infirmed and elderly in the area.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, and son, David. She is survived by sons Robert Allen Kayser Jr. and Dallas Kayser (Lee Anne); daughter-in-law Martha; grandchildren Robert, Laura (James), Matthew, Jennifer (Jarrett), Emily, Katie, Michelle (Mohamed), and Randy; and great grandchildren Audra, Norah, Jacob, James, Stratton, and Amelia, and many more nieces and nephews whom she dearly loved.

A celebration of her life will be held at 2 pm Wednesday, February 8 th , 2023, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Point Pleasant, WV (615 Viand Street), with Pastor Ronnie Tote officiating.  A visitation will be held from 12-2 pm prior to the service. Burial will follow at the Kirkland Memorial Gardens in Point Pleasant. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Wilcoxen Funeral Home in Point Pleasant.
