Art Hartley Sr.

Art Hartley Sr., 88, of Point Pleasant, passed away Tuesday, January 31, 2017, at Pleasant Valley Hospital. He was born January 15, 1929, in Cottageville, WV, a son of the late Vitus Bering Hartley Sr. and Minnie May (Newberry) Hartley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Murlin Elizabeth (Hill) Hartley; daughter, Brenda Kay( Hartley) Holloway; son, Vitus Ray Hartley; and two brothers, Harley Harding Hartley and Vitus Hartley Jr. and two sisters, Grace Adeline Hartley Casto and Virginia Marie Hartley Click. Art was a graduate of Point Pleasant High School Class of 1947, Morris Harvey College, Charleston, WV in 1953, Northwestern University, Evanston, Il in 1956 and Charleston School of Commerce in 1959. In 1953, Art became self employed holding several offices in companies started by his father Vitus Sr and brothers Vitus Jr. and Harley Hartley, Vitus Hartley and Sons of Point Pleasant. He was Past President of City Ice and Fuel Company and member of the West Virginia LP Gas Association and West Virginia Motor Truck Association. From September 1997 to April 2000, Art served as a Director of Ohio Valley Bank. During this time he was a member of the Bank Marketing and Long Range Planning Committee and West Virginia Banking Advisory Board. In April of 2000, Mr. Hartley was named Director Emeritus of Ohio Valley Bank. Art also served on the Board of Directors for Citizens National Bank for many years. He was also a member of Minturn Lodge 19 A.F. & A.M. , Franklin Commandery #17 Knights Templar, Point Pleasant Chapter #7 Royal Arch Masons, Beni Kedem Shrine of Charleston, West Virginia Farm Museum, Loyal Order of Moose # 731, Odd Fellows Lodge# 33 of Point Pleasant, and Trinity United Methodist Church. His interests revolved around work and his companies. He was always interested in community and civic affairs, to make a better community for his family. After his retirement in 2000, to his families surprise he became interested in gardening along side of his wife Murlin. They also enjoyed their winters spent in Florida. He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Art Ellis Jr. and Janet (Stalnaker) Hartley and Greg and Tina (Holland) Hartley; six grandchildren, Maribeth Eisel Coon, Art Ellis Hartley III , Heather Lynn Hartley Horner, Brianne Hartley Klone, Marlee Elizabeth Hartley and Kaylee Rae Hartley; four great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Ethel (Durst) Hartley; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service and burial was held at 1 p.m. Friday, February 3, 2017, at Creston Cemetery in Leon, with Pastor Jim Kelly officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 615 Viand Street, Point Pleasant, WV 25550 Arrangements were under the direction of Wilcoxen Funeral Home in Point Pleasant.
